quotes from books i've read recently

From "Without Reservations" by Alice Steinbach

"Something inside me wanted to protect the relationship from outside opinions or advice. At least for a while."

"I thought of E.B. White's observation that "once in everyone's life there is apt to be a period when he is fully awake, instead of half-asleep."

movie to see--> summertime w/ Katherine Hepburn

From "Love in a Small Town" Wang Anyi

"There is only one big, long bench for everyone to squeeze on and to sleep at night, like a kang in Northeastern China."

"In fact, after the baptisim of lust she is cleaner and purer than at any time before, but no one understands this, not even herself."

salsa party in zamaleck

tonight, i put on my best outfit. linen pants from carrefour, a shirt from H&M city stars, a belt from a store on road 206 over the shirt, my favorite earings from Claire's city stars and sandals from the states. I even did my hair, showered, and jumped in a cab with my roomates. a salsa party in Zamaleck. now, my salsa moves are poor. embarrasingly poor for a Spanish major. but i went anyway. i thought---maybe someone will see me sipping my drink, watching my talented roomates dance, and be attracted to my quietness HA. maybe i'll find my soul mate in Zamaleck tonight. stranger things have happened, right?

HA. the party was 2/3 girls. the guys who were there were hard core Salsa fans and danced the whole night. Well, except for two. Sayeed and Ahmed. Of course. The only older (40+) ish men there had to start talking to me, telling me I was a genious, telling me how he was half eritrian half egyptian, introduce his friend who is a "big buisnessman, owns a factory", and Sayeed himself lives in Germany but has two empty flats here---

It all seems harmless enough, but why are Egyptian men talking to me? Especially much much older ones? And did I really need to know that your sister has a PhD in gynecology? NO THANKS! THe thing is, men dont' talk to women here, but foreigners seem not to count.

Anyway, at least I had a nice taxi ride home. I said " maadi digla, gamb midan victoria, and he asked inta minen, and I said min america, and he said bikutlum arabe gueza and i said, la'a, shukra"

it made me happy. arabic class made me happy today too, although old words make me sad, new words make me happy.

The Wire

About half an hour ago. I was sitting in my living room (which has five gorgeous windows, 12 panes each) when the helicopters started. It's not unusual to hear helicopters in this town---or even to see them flashing their searchlight inside our windows. Yet, it is different to hear them shout from the helicopters "Stay where you are with your hands up." So they're circling our appartment/block, and I'm running to all three corners of our house to try and figure out where the racket is coming from. I see the cop lights reflected in the windows across from us on henrietta---and the cops racing down the street on Charles, sirens and lights blaring. Still, I can't quite figure where whatever is happening is happening. So, I go upstairs to my room and peer out the back window / balcony into the parking lot. What do I see? (Well besides the searchlight fixed in the back lot??) Two cop cars in the lot with their red and blue lights flashing. A bunch of cops standing like twenty feet from my car. Suddenly, two more cop cars, then a fifth cop jeep, and then what looked like a plainclothes car. I stood there hovering for a while, trying to figure out what was going on and calling my fed hill friends telling them not to go outside! This went on for like 10 minutes, a group of like ten people were gathered down on Hanover street, and finally the cops pulled away and the search 'copter flew off to the next big disaster. Even when I lived in Ridgleys there wasn't this much excitement. Ahhhh Baltimore.
